History
The city of Alicante, or in Valenciano Alacant, is the capital of the province of the same name and lies in the south of the autonomous region of Valencia. It is situated on a wide bay on the southeast Spanish coast.
The Greeks were impressed by the unusual brightness of the area and in the year 324 B.C. founded the city named “white stronghold”, Akra Leuke. Subsequently the Romans who took of power in 201 B.C. named the city “Lucentum” – city of the light. From 711 to 1249 Alicante came under the rule of the Moors who changed the Roman name to “Al Lucamt”. In 1265 the City of Alicante was integrated in to the kingdom of Aragonien and was subsequently, in 1308, reassigned to the kingdom Valencia. Nowadays the city is made up of seafront promenades, wide Avenues, parks, hotels and high rise buildings. Alicante is one of the fastest growing cities in the land, primarily due to tourism, but also because of the export of wine, fruit and olive oil. Alicante also has a very strong leather, textile and shoe industry.

The international airport in Alicante has been developing and expanding over the last few years and now has numerous holiday makers passing through each year. In 2006 approximate 6 million passengers landed in Alicante.
