Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain and the capital of Catalonia. Barcelona is one of Spain’s major Mediterranean ports and also has the second largest airport in the country.

Barcelona has a colourful history and there are two legends surrounding it’s foundation. The first legend suggests that it was founded by Hercules 400 years before Rome was built. It was then rebuilt by the father of Hannibal, Hamilcar Barca who named the city Barcino. The other legend attributes the foundation >>>>

Subsequently, in about 15 BC the Romans used the town as a castrum (military camp). Some important Roman remains can still be found and some are exposed under the Plaça del Rei by the entrance of the city museum. The typical Roman grid planning is still noticeable in the layout of the city today.

In the fifth century occupation passed to the Visigoths and after this to Moors in the early eighth century. It was reconquered in 801 by Charlemagne’s son Louis.

In more recent history Barcelona has been devastated several times by civil war and also came briefly under the rule of Napoleon. In the nineteenth century Barcelona grew and flourished during the industrial revolution.

After the death of Franco Barcelona turned in to a centre of cultural vitality and underwent massive transformations. The improvements resulted in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.

Barcelona Airport has three terminals, A is international departures and arrivals, B is national and European arrivals and C is for Air Shuttle flights.
