The smallest of the Canary Islands El Hierro is nicknamed Meridian Island. This name arose because before the discovery of America it was the furthest point know to man and thought to be the end of the world, it was therefore used as the Zero Meridian for time until this was moved to Greenwich in England.

The first settlers on El Hierro were the Bimbaches, but in the 15th century a Norman, Jean de Bethencourt, peacefully conquered El Hierro and peasants from mainland Spain and France quickly colonized the island mixing with the native population.

The name El Hierro is derived from the Spanish word for Iron and Ferro the Latin for iron is sometimes used as an alternative name. The island is 278 square kilometres so your Car Hire will allow you to travel through most of the island, if you wish to, during your stay. The highest point on the island is 1,501 metres. Much of the beautiful landscape is protected by the Natural Spaces Act. Your Car Hire will enable you to reach the curative spring at Pozo de la Salud or the calm waters of Mar de Las Calmas.
