Border restrictions have now been relaxed and queues are now far less of a problem than they were even a year ago. This is because of current and ongoing discussions between the Governments of the UK, Gibraltar and Spain to remove many of the restrictions which had previously been imposed by Spain in their continued proposals for joint sovereignty. Prior to an agreement in 2006 only UK flights had been able to land in Gibraltar, but following this historic covenant the first flight from Madrid landed in Gibraltar on 15th December 2006. Spanish officials arrived with the flight and it was the first time a Spanish Government minister had visited Gibraltar since 1954.
