LA GOMERA AIRPORT CAR HIRE

La Gomera Airport is located in the south of the island 34 kilometres from the capital San Sebastian. It is a small but very modern airport having been inaugurated in 1999. Although traffic is restricted to flights between La Gomera and other Canary Islands it has been proving to be a very popular destination and in just six years the volume of traffic has tripled.

You will no doubt want to book Car Hire in order to fully explore this small (383 sq. Kms) but fascinating island. The distance from north to south of La Gomera is approximately 20 km. With your Car Hire you will be able to visit the San Sebastián, the islands capital, where in 1492 Christopher Columbus stopped on his way to unknown lands across the Atlantic. The house in San Sebastián where he stayed is now a tourist attraction.

Although La Gomera is a small island it is mountainous and the ground to cover between two points, which was never much, was measured in the time and effort required to descend one steep hillside and cross the valley to ascend the next hill. This could on foot take a person several hours, even if the actual distance was no more than a few hundred metres as the crow flied. For this reason the Gomeran whistling language “Silbo” was born. The language is still preserved today and the Island Government actively promote the continued study of El Silbo in the curriculum of pupils at Primary School and the first years of Secondary School.
